President and Mrs. Andrew Johnson
Andrew Johnson was the only Southern Senator who stayed loyal to the Union, and that brought him to the Vice-Presidency on the Union Ticket in 1864 with President Lincoln, which led to his ascent to the Presidency and then having to escape death threats and impeachment. Elisa was a strong figure in his life, but always in the back ground. They were the "First Couple" who married at the youngest age and Andy Johnson did something that no other ex-President did.  His whole political career, through many, many storms was guided by his unwavering belief in the Constitution.  An exciting, eye opening show about an almost forgotten President.

KIDZ DAYZ 2010 TO FOCUS ON FITNESS

Kidz Dayz, the annual expo for Volusia County young people and their families staged by the Port Orange Family Days Community Trust, will emphasize fitness during its March 18-21 run at City Center in the heart of Port Orange.

The event will feature a free Friday night Movie Under the Stars geared for young audiences, a Saturday Family Expo that annually draws thousands to tented booths set up around City Center’s Lake to showcase family-friendly goods and services and, from Thursday through Sunday, a quality carnival catering to Kidz.  All activities are open to Fun Coast families and there is no admission.  Events, except for the carnival and the products of vendors, are free and discount coupons for carnival rides will be available.

Family Days Community Trust, a non-profit partner of the City of Port Orange geared to making the community and all Volusia family-friendly, has sought support this year from the Volusia County Health Department and its Healthy Volusia program; Healthy Kids; the Port Orange YMCA; area schools and health care providers to encourage young people to shed pounds and families to focus on better nutrition.   “The whole nation has come to see childhood obesity and its role in the increase of diseases such as diabetes, as a critical issue,” Port Orange Vice Mayor Mary Martin, who is assisting with Kidz Dayz, said.  “There is so much good information available on improving fitness and making better food choices without upsetting a family budget that it’s worth our effort to get the word out.”

Martin will be the official starter for a Fitness Fun Run that will wind around the City Center Lake to kick-off the Saturday events.  Other elements of the theme will include health screenings and healthy eating information for kids and families in the Lakeside Community Center and performances on the adjacent stage of the Parker Amphitheater.  Collection of personal items for military personnel overseas will again be a feature of the Kidz Care For Our Troops Booth. Donations will be packaged and sent, along with notes of thanks and support from the Kidz Dayz participants.

Proceeds from Kidz Dayz, Family Days and other events go to support the maintenance and improvement of facilities used by families and for contributions to area schools and to food banks for those in need.  Vendors wishing to participate in Kidz Dayz 2010 may register or obtain additional information by going to www.familydays.com  which features full information on all Kidz Dayz activities and schedules.

8-9pm -- UFO Hunters - The Real Roswell
New evidence suggests there was more than one UFO crash near Roswell. On July 8, 1947 at 5:26 EDT, an Associated Press news wire announced that soldiers from Roswell Army Air Field in New Mexico recovered a "flying disk" from a nearby rancher's property. The tiny town of Roswell has never been the same. Now, 61 years later, new theories, new witnesses and new evidence have emerged. The most shocking lead is that there may have been a second crash, and if it can be found, it may finally reveal what really happened at Roswell.

8-9pm -- Decoding The Past - Mysteries of the Garden of Eden
The biblical Garden of Eden was taken away from man because of his sins. The Bible says Eden was located east of Israel where four rivers meet--The Tigris and Euphrates and the Pison and Gihon. The later two have long been considered mythical; however recent satellite photography suggests these rivers did exist in Iraq. Another theory places Eden's location beneath the Black Sea. Do texts other than the Bible reinforce the idea of Eden? Both the Babylonian Epic of Gilgamesh and Ancient Greek texts speak of a paradise lost. Sift through the evidence to decode an age-old mystery about how paradise was lost, and where it might be found.
9-10pm -- UFO Hunters - Alien Crashes
In the early morning hours of May 14, 2008, witnesses in Needles, CA saw a turquoise glowing object in a rapid descent over the Colorado River. Soon after, military helicopters carried away an object that appeared to be glowing, and according to witnesses, military personnel canvassed the town, intimidating witnesses and townspeople. But alleged cover-ups of strange crashes are nothing new--from Flatwoods, West Virginia to Kecksburg, Pennsylvania, reports of UFO clean-ups are rampant. The team visits the site of the most current UFO crash in the world to search for signs of what some say the government keeps trying to hide.

10-11pm -- UFO Hunters - Giant UFOs
On January 28, 1994, an Air France pilot, his crew and passengers witnessed a brightly-glowing red and brown disc-shaped object while flying to London. Estimates of the disc's size were between 800 and 1,000 feet long, more than three times the size of a 747. On April 25, 2007, the captain of a passenger plane crossing the English Channel observed two bright-yellow flat objects for more than 15 minutes. He is astounded by their size, which he claims could have been as much as a mile wide. A pilot from a separate aircraft corroborated the story. The team takes to the skies to probe some of the largest UFO sightings ever recorded.

Laurel Lea Rogers
Date of Birth: 06/04/1981

Laurel Rogers was last seen leaving her residence located at 1069 Horizon View Boulevard, Port Orange, Florida at 2000 hours on February 1, 2010.  Laurel Rogers does not have a functioning vehicle and it is unknown who she might have left with.  According to Laurel Rogers’s mother (Lauretta Rogers) Laurel Rogers suffers from Lupus and Laurel Rogers’s does not have her medications with her.  It is very out of the ordinary for Laurel Rogers to be gone for any extended period of time without her medications or notifying her mother.  The Port Orange Police Department conducted a “locate” on Laurel Rogers’ cell phone on February 1, 2010 at approximately 1900 hours. This “locate” showed that her cell phone was within a two mile radius of a cell tower at 6115 Baker Road in New Port Richey, Florida.

Laurel Rogers was last seen wearing a black shirt, blue jeans, and sneakers (unknown make or color). Laurel Rogers often wears a necklace (with two rings as charms) and rings on every finger.  Laurel Rogers is 5’7” tall, sandy blonde hair (to the middle of her back); blue eyes, and weighs approximately 150 lbs. Laurel Rogers does not have any scars or tattoos; however, due to her diagnosis of Lupus, Laurel Rogers has substantial bruising on her arms and legs.

If any agencies develop any information on the whereabouts of Laurel Rogers, please hold and notify, Detective Eric Fields at (386) 506-5893 or (386) 756-7400.  Contact can also be made by email: efields@port-orange.org. Rabid raccoon bites prompt warning in Ponce Inlet

By ANNE GEGGIS
STAFF WRITER, Daytona Beach News-Journal

The Volusia County Health Department today issued a 60-day rabies alert for five miles of the beachside from unincorporated Wilbur-by-the-Sea to the southern limit of Ponce Inlet following three unprovoked attacks on humans by raccoons.

These attacks began on Jan. 24 and there were two more attacks on Jan. 29 in the same two-mile area, said Paul Minshew, environmental health manager for the Volusia County Health Department.

"These were daytime attacks so it was all the more disturbing," Minshew said, noting that raccoons are largely nocturnal animals.

Minshew said the attacks were all unprovoked. Officials were able to test one of the raccoons after it was killed after biting a victim Jan. 29 in the Wilbur-by-the-Sea attack. The other two raccoons escaped before they could be captured, he said. Laboratory results Tuesday showed the deceased raccoon was rabid, Minshew said.

The victims all suffered bites that broke the skin and were recommended to begin a series of five rabies shots.

“Rabies is a very serious virus,” said Dr. Bonnie J. Sorensen, director of the Volusia County Health Department. “All citizens in Volusia County should be aware that rabies is present in the wild animal population and domestic animals are at risk if not vaccinated.”

The public is asked to maintain a heightened awareness that rabies is active in Volusia County. Alerts are designed to increase awareness to the public, but they should not give a false sense of security to areas that have not been named as under an alert.

It is important at this time to avoid leaving food outside for pets or wildlife. Feeding wildlife draws them closer to human populations and lessens their fear of people which is especially dangerous when the wild population carries a deadly virus such as rabies.

An animal with rabies could infect other wild animals or domestic animals that have not been vaccinated against rabies. All domesticated animals should be vaccinated against rabies and all wildlife contact should be avoided, particularly raccoons, feral cats, bats, foxes, skunks, otters, bobcats and coyotes.

Rabies is a disease of the nervous system and can be fatal to humans and other warm-blooded animals. The only treatment for human exposure to rabies is rabies specific immune globulin and rabies immunization. Appropriate treatment started soon after the exposure, will protect an exposed person from the disease

DRUG SWEEP IN SOUTHEAST VOLUSIA NETS 16 ARRESTS

More than a dozen accused street dealers were rounded up Thursday during a sweeping narcotics operation targeting illegal drug activity in the New Smyrna Beach and Edgewater area. Spearheaded by the East Volusia Narcotics Task Force, Thursday’s arrests capped off an approximately six-month effort to identify and investigate street-level drug dealers. The effort paid off, with a total of 16 arrests. Narcotics investigators are still searching for another 20 suspects named in the investigation.

During the course of the investigation, dubbed “Operation Crack Down,” undercover officers and confidential informants collected evidence through more than 50 covert purchases of cocaine, marijuana and prescription pills from street dealers. The investigation resulted in the issuance of arrest warrants for 35 suspects. Two of the defendants were arrested Thursday in their jail cells at the Volusia County Branch Jail in Daytona Beach, where they were already in custody on unrelated charges. Narcotics agents moved in Thursday and nabbed another 13 people on the arrest list. In total, 22 warrants were served on the following 15 defendants arrested Thursday:

In addition to the warrant round-up, narcotics agents with the assistance of SWAT units from the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office and New Smyrna Beach Police Department executed a search warrant at a home on Palm Street in New Smyrna Beach. Curry was being held at the jail on $30,500 bond. A second search warrant was executed at a house on Charlovix Street in New Smyrna Beach, where defendants Gayle and Morgan were arrested. After finding a small amount of marijuana in the home, agents additionally charged Morgan with possession of marijuana under 20 grams.

The East Volusia Narcotics Task Force is a multi-agency force of narcotics agents from the Sheriff’s Office and the Daytona Beach, Edgewater, New Smyrna Beach and Ormond Beach police departments that shares resources and crosses jurisdictional boundaries to combat street-level drug and vice crimes. Also assisting in Thursday’s operation were the West Volusia Narcotics Task Force, the Volusia Bureau of Investigation, the New Smyrna Beach Police Department and the Sheriff’s Office’s Crime Suppression Team.

Update #2:
Following this afternoon's discovery of the missing U-Haul truck at Jacksonville International Airport, Volusia County Sheriff's investigators have confirmed that Ronak Desai boarded a 6:20 a.m. flight from Jacksonville to Atlanta on Wednesday, where he changed planes and then continued on to Las Vegas. The information has been confirmed through credit card records, surveillance video from the Jacksonville airport and airline records obtained by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA). Desai purchased the tickets using his first and middle names and surveillance video shows Desai by himself at the Jacksonville airport.

Sheriff's investigators don't know why Desai left town and also don't know where he is staying at this time. While they will continue to try to make contact with Desai, investigators have concluded that he wasn't under the involuntary control of anyone else when he boarded the planes and has not been the victim of any foul play.

The case remains under investigation as the Sheriff's Office continues to look into Desai's actions and the circumstances surrounding the incident.

SHERIFF’S OFFICE SEARCHING FOR MISSING ORMOND MAN

Missing Man Update:

The U-Haul truck mentioned in the original news release (see below) has been found at an airport in Jacksonville. Desai is still missing, though, and the investigation/search is still active.

-- PREVIOUSLY ---

While family members have heard from a missing 28-year-old Ormond Beach man, Volusia County Sheriff’s investigators still don’t know where he is and have not solved the mystery of his disappearance Tuesday night.

Relatives initially launched their own search for Ronak Desai when he failed to return home after working at the family-run business, a Jiffy Food Store on South Nova Road near Ormond Beach. U-Haul trucks also are rented at the business, and family members said Desai was scheduled to rent a truck to a customer shortly before the store was due to close at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday night. Desai’s father called the Sheriff’s Office at 10:46 p.m. to report his son missing after driving to the store and finding his son’s vehicle and cell phone in the parking lot, but no sign of Desai or the U-Haul truck.

Deputies have been investigating all night and into Wednesday in an effort to locate Desai, but so far without success. Desai contacted a family member Wednesday morning, but the conversation did not result in any disclosure of his whereabouts. Desai is of Middle Eastern descent and is 5’ 7” and weighs about 200 pounds. He has black hair, brown eyes, a medium build and medium complexion. Investigators also continue searching for the U-Haul truck, although it is not known if it’s connected in any way to Desai’s disappearance. The U-Haul truck has an Arizona plate. The tag number is AB67167. Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at (386) 248-1777.
