Addicted to Bush By PAUL KRUGMAN Republican leaders seem to want a complete return to the Bush agenda, but how can they embrace Bush's policies give3krugman.
html?th&emc=th

I think the last Bush and the first Bush were poor quality presidents. The last Bush did nothing about securing our borders, despit 9/11. He tried to let a foreign nation govern our ports. He gave our stores and factories away to China. And he let wall street get away with highway robbery. Bush started the bail out before Obama got into office. Bush and Obama, are part of the new world order.

As credit card holders play it safe, issuers increase non-penalty service fees

. . . . In a lawsuit filed last month, outdoor retailer Gander Mountain, based in Minnesota, claimed that its credit card partner, World Financial Network, was turning down shoppers with nearly perfect credit scores of 800 or above. Gander Mountain said the reason was that the issuer said it could not make money from those clients, which World Financial Network estimated as about a quarter of new applicants. That created "a negative customer experience" that could drive shoppers away, the suit said. Both Gander Mountain and the issuer's parent company, Alliance Data, declined to comment on the suit. . . . .

From Craig E. Young, Port Orange, Fl.

Isn't also true, that our City's Public Safety Unions may also contribute to the campaigns of our elected City officials, who have the power to, then, grant them..... all sorts of these same kinds of FAVORS?

RE: . . . . Amendment 4, which we will vote on in November, is necessary to address the many cases where developers bought restricted land, then successfully petitioned for comprehensive land- use changes that increased the value of that property exponentially. In Florida, such petitioners may legally contribute to the campaigns of the elected officials who have the power to, then, grant the requested comprehensive land-use changes. . . . .

Hank,

Isn't also true, that our City's Public Safety Unions may also contribute to the campaigns of our elected City officials, who have the power to, then, grant them..... all sorts of these same kinds of FAVORS?

Lets see,

This year, we have many candidates who are running for City Council, but a few really stand out in this regard.....Just take a look at the Port Orange Firefighters Union Website....@ http://www.portorangefirefighters.org/

First you'll notice the Union's endorsement of Mr. Bob Ford, for District 1, and Mr. John Cardullo for City Council District 4.

Then, if you scroll down the screen on that same Union website, you notice our City's Firefighter's Union held a FUNDRAISER for Mr. Cardullo.

In fact, Hank, you put that same notice on your website....not very long ago.

And isn't it a fact, that our City's Firefighter's Union has at least held one other Fundraiser for Mr. Cardullo; The one they held at Neighbors Ice Cream on Central Park Blvd? ...... seems to me you posted a notice on your website about that one too!

So, forgive me, but it seems to me, that DEVELOPERS AND OUR CITY'S UNIONS...... should all be lumped-in together, when it comes to being called "SPECIAL INTERESTS", that use their money to influence our City Elections.....IN RETURN FOR THESE KINDS OF FAVORS.......

In fact, I'd go so far to say, that our City's Public Safety Unions have been far more successful in that regard, than ALL of the DEVELOPERS who ever did any work in Port Orange COMBINED.

And I'll offer your readers these as PROOF; ( see below references)

After all, do we owe Mori, or Buddy, or any other DEVELOPER..... $36 Million dollars?

I GUESS NOT! But that's what we owe our Public Safety Unions......Its commonly called their Unfunded Pension Liabilities.....

And that makes me wonder? How much more do they want?  And how much more of our money, is Mr. Cardullo willing to give our Firefighter's Union, in exchange for their undying Love and Support?

Please note this recently published in the Hometown News;

  • "Mr. Kennedy said raising taxes is "counterproductive" and would drive businesses and residents away from the area. In contrast, Mr. Cardullo said he supports raising taxes only if the increase funds public safety departments."

        See that  @ http://www.myhometownnews.net/index.php?id=71150

DOES THAT MEAN MR. CARDULLO WANTS TO HIRE MORE FIREFIGHTERS, OR JUST INCREASE THEIR PENSIONS OR GIVE THEM A NICE BIG FAT RAISE? ( or both)

And I think that's a fair question to ask him, considering the enormous effort our Firefighter's Union has put forth, in trying to get Mr. Cardullo elected to our City Council............

Are we to believe, that our Firefighter's Union is just being Altruistic in this regard?

Or has Mr. Cardullo promised them something....THAT'S GOING TO COST US ANOTHER FORTUNE?

From the City Manager's 2010-2011 Budget Memo; as seen @ http://www.port-orange.org/inside/inside52.ph

  • "The Police Pension Plan showed an increase in both the required contribution and in the unfunded liability. The unfunded liability in the prior reporting period was $17,069,148. The unfunded liability of the Plan as provided in the current report is $18,224,883. This amounts to an increase of $1,155,773. The City’s required contribution for the upcoming fiscal year will increase by $219,287. The City’s required contribution for the current fiscal year is $2,308,388. The City’s required contribution for the upcoming fiscal year beginning October 1, 2010, is $2,527,675."

        [Page 18]

  • "The Fire Pension Plan showed an increase in both the required contribution and in the unfunded liability. The unfunded liability in the prior reporting period was $15,878,418. The unfunded liability of the plan as provided in the current report is $17,846,823. This amounts to an increase of $1,968,405. The City’s required contribution increase for the upcoming fiscal year will increase by $524,069. The City’s required contribution for the current fiscal year is $1,426,983. The City’s required contribution for the upcoming fiscal year is $1,951,053.

  • This required increase of almost $750,000 will make it extremely difficult for the City to maintain a millage rate of 4.6 mills without making additional cuts in the operating budget. Adopting the rollback rate would cover the increase in Pension cost.

  • As you are aware, the contracts are still outstanding; and they have not been resolved. Therefore, we must assume the funding level for the upcoming year will be without any increased contributions from the members of the Police and Fire Pensions."

        [Page 19]

From an article published in the News Journal some years ago....that the former Fire Chief of Port Orange wrote......

"One fire service, but who directs it?

By MICHAEL ERTZ
COMMUNITY VOICE

"............ Several Volusia County municipalities awarded large pay increases to their firefighters in previous years, in part due to fire unions lobbying and campaigning for their chosen candidate. In Port Orange under former Mayor Dorothy Hukill, some union firefighters received raises in excess of 30 percent. In Ormond Beach, after union lobbying, at least one firefighter retired making more money than when he was working. In Port Orange, a 19-year-old firefighter can retire at age 39 with at least 60 percent of his last three years average wage. Large wage increases and lucrative pension plans compound year after year, having an adverse effect on future budgets.

The point made here is that even elected officials with expected fiduciary responsibilities for a wide range of municipal services can adversely affect a budget in exchange for enhancing their own political goals......."

---------------- Hank Responds -------------------

Craig, I think everything you point out to us in your commentary, is true.

At the present time, this nation is tied to a system of favors possibly returned

for campaign money. Some favors allegedly dispensed by our elected officials

are detested by voters, more than others. All and all, it seems kind of corrupt

doesn't it, and I think most citizens are sick and tired of it,

especially on the federal level. Can non profit groups or not for profit groups

contribute money to political campaigns? Real estate companies contribute.

AND RECEIVED 7 19 10 FROM MR. KEN PARKER,

CITY MANGER OF PORT ORANGE.

They contacted staff about scheduling this back to the agenda.  They are aware of City Council’s previous action but they were not present to represent themselves.  They have indicated that they might be offering to give the property to the City in exchange for release of lien.  We would need to check to see what else is owed on the property before even considering such an offer.  Negotiations sometimes do occur in similar fashion as Craig has suggested.  However, until the company presents an offer to the City, staff is proceeding in accordance with the last City Council’s action.

So, who are these people?

The Kondaur Capital Corporation...

From Craig E. Young, Port Orange, Fl.

Hank,

So, who are these people?
The Kondaur Capital Corporation.....

Well, here's their website......See it @ http://www.kondaur.com/

Welcome to Kondaur Capital Corporation

Kondaur Capital Corporation is the only premier purchaser of Scratch & Dent residential mortgage loans. Kondaur maximizes its bids through its unique management, servicing and liquidation strategies.

Kondaur will competitively bid any type of one-to-four family residential loans whatsoever, including

  • "Story" loans
  • Hyper-defaulted loans
  • Loans secured by unique properties
  • Loans with origination fraud
  • Loans with regulatory violations
  • Loans rejected for investor purchase

KONDAUR WILL BID ON A SINGLE LOAN ON A ONE TIME BASIS OR ON A POOL OF LOANS. KONDAUR WILL GIVE LOAN LEVEL PRICING ON WHICH A SELLER MAY "CHERRY PICK" LOANS TO SELL.

So, apparently, THEY HAVE SOME BIG BUCKS! ( or at least a fancy website)

But not enough to pay The City of Port Orange the $58,700.00 they owe them........????

DOES ANYBODY REALLY BELIEVE THAT?

ref.

Item 7 -Request for Reduction of Lien – 724 Nixon Lane

Kondaur Capital Corporation, property owner, is requesting a reduction or removal of liens against property located at 724 Nixon Lane. A fine of $58,700.00

ALSO, here's what I found on the State's website......( see below)

See anybody there with a PORT ORANGE ADDRESS?
Of course, not......

But it will be INTERESTING to see, who shows-up to REPRESENT THEM....(if anybody does this time)

ps

Henry,

Didn't they call them "button men" a long time ago?

Item 7 -           Request for Reduction of Lien – 724 Nixon Lane

commentary by Craig E. Young, Port Orange, Fl.

This is like déjà vu all over again....Didn't this same thing appear on a City Council Agenda a few months ago? And didn't the City Council reject it back then?
First, we bailout the banks, because they made bad real estate loans, and now we're being asked to bailout the people who bought those same bad real estate loans from our now bailed-out banks......
ps
This is commonly called the "Trickle-down theory".
.....and the taxpayers are getting REALLY tired of being "trickled" on.....

HERE'S MY SUGGESTION TO THE COUNCIL;  If these people show up, this time, tell them we'll reduce the fines to our true costs plus 20%, but ONLY if they bring their checkbook, and pay the balance RIGHT NOW. ( 30 days net)  After all, if we have to wait until they sell this property to collect-there's no sense in reducing the fines.

Item 7 -           Request for Reduction of Lien – 724 Nixon Lane

Kondaur Capital Corporation, property owner, is requesting a reduction or removal of liens against property located at 724 Nixon Lane. A fine of $58,700.00 has accumulated against the property. Nelson Valdes, previous owner of the property, was provided legal notice of the Code Board’s action and failed to appeal. Code Board fines began to accrue after an inspection on September 24, 2008. Fines continued to accrue on the property until an inspection confirmed compliance on May 4, 2010.
Kondaur Capital acquired the distressed mortgage from Wells Fargo Bank on December 23, 2009. The certificate of title was issued to Kondaur Capital on March 22, 2010 and they became the owner of record. Kondaur Capital corrected all violations by May 4, 2010 and set a maintenance schedule for the property.  While attempting to sell the property, Kondaur Capital discovered the liens that had been placed against the property by the City of Port Orange. Said liens included a utility lien, lot mowing lien and the on-going code enforcement fine of $100.00 per day while the property was in violation. The City of Port Orange was contacted by Kondaur Capital in April 2010 requesting the lien reduction or removal in order to sell the property.

"............How does Kondaur Capital differ?  They do an extensive review before they buy a mortgage.  They get a current estimate of the value of the property.  They then look at the balance of the mortgage and the monthly payment.  They also take into account the person’s income.  Then they go further.  They look at the person’s other bills to see how much they have to pay monthly.  Next they look at their track record to see how the person has made their monthly payments in the past.  Have they normally paid their bills on time?"...........

Port Orange City asks cost to replace police

By LYDA LONGA, Staff Writer, July 2, 2010 12:05 AM

In a six-page letter dated June 28, City Manager Ken Parker asked Volusia County Sherrif Johnson how much it would cost Port Orange if the sheriff were to take over police services for the city of more than 56,000 people.

So far this year, Port Orange is the only city that has asked the Sheriff's Office for a cost proposal, Johnson said. Edgewater and Oak Hill did so in years past, but kept their police departments.

In 2008, Deltona voters rejected a referendum calling for a city police department.

From Port Orange Fire Rescue

At 1:49 a.m., Port Orange Fire-Rescue responded to a residential fire at 489 Leslie Dr (in Spruce Creek Village Mobile Home Park). The first unit was on scene at 1:52 and the fire was extinguished at 2:05. The fire was set by the 3 year-old great grandchild of the homeowners who was playing with a lighter and set his mattress on fire. All occupants were outside upon arrival, but apparently tried to put the fire out before leaving; they suffered smoke inhalation and one had burns to both hands. Both great grandparents were transported to Halifax Port Orange in serious condition (the child was not injured). The fire resulted in about $50,000 in damage and the State Fire Marshal is responding.

I watched the Port Orange City Council meeting of June 22, 2010

on POG TV, channel 199, Brighthouse.

The following are some notes:

Councilman Pohlmann noted that the history of mankind has evolved around location of water.

Perhaps he has read "The Source", by Michener.

A FIRST FOR HANK TO WITNESS:

A council person disagreed with another council person.

Dennis Kennedy disagreed with George Steindoerfer's assessment of

a proposal for the city workers' retirement system. I have never seen

at a city council meeting, such an expressed disasgreement. I note that

incumbent Kennedy is campaigning to be re elected to his district seat.

George stated that he should not be identified as Dennis,

because Dennis has a beard, and George does not.

Councilman Pohlmann does not like the wording of the new proposed sign

to be placed in the Riverwalk Project area. He does not like,

"--- Riverwalk ---- the new heart of Port Orange".

I agree with Mr. Pohlmann. Where is the old heart of Port Orange?

---- Wal mart?, --- The Port Hole?

Do goats have beards? Dennis thought that a good tool to have on

any green roofs built in Port Orange, (for mowing the grass and keeping down weeds,?)

would be a goat.

Dennis implied he does not like to see people without licenses

drive to a bar on a mower.

Mary Martin is not too hot on the idea of golf carts, because she could

not legally drive one to Food Lion.

Mayor Green wants to grow a rice paddy, and is looking for advice from

a Chinese person who was brought up in the country, and not in a big city

Bob expressed the idea that Arkansas is "some state".

I always thought that about Alabama.

While Assistant City Manager, Sharon Lewis was giving a presentation,

the Mayor was worried that his 3 minute egg timer was not functioning.

He discovered that it was not plugged in.

Penelope appeared somewhat taken back when the Mayor asked

her if "she was on schedule".

My wife calls this POG TV show - "Hee Haw!"

I see similarities to "Laugh In".

Traffic light needed?

From Bill McCord, City of Port Orange,

A traffic signal is proposed for the intersection of Taylor Road and Boggs Ford Road/Yorktowne Boulevard extension upon construction of the Yorktowne extension. The Yorktowne Boulevard extension will align with Boggs Ford Road at the Taylor Road intersection creating a four-way (approach) intersection. The Yorktowne extension will not be constructed until the proposed Altamira shopping center is developed.

3.         At this point the signal and other roadway improvements would be constructed by the City. However, final details on funding and constructing the improvements have not been made. One proposal is for the developers to convey the right-of-way for the Yorktowne Blvd. extension and relocate the drainage canal on the property, then the City would construct the roadway within the dedicated right-of-way.

Also:

We do not have traffic counts on Boggs Ford Road since it is just a local street. There are approximately 245 single family lots on Boggs Ford Rd or on roadways that connect or with Boggs Ford Road. An average of between 6-10 trips per day per dwelling unit is generated by this development. This could represent from 1470 and 2450 daily trips on Boggs Ford Road at the Taylor Road intersection.
