The following article shows the new social consciousness that our elected leaders loath. The reason? -- they are no longer in charge of dispensing their view of information, and like it or not, are being forced into a dialogue with their consitutents. ----Dialogue they feel is not to their advantage, because the citizen can take the issue to where the citizen wants the light to shine . Our elected leaders have usually never had to contend with that before but . . . “It’s a new day,” he added. “Brace yourselves.” . .

CHAMBER SALUTES PUBLIC SAFETY PROFESSIONALS
Professionalism, excellence in work standards and dedication to public service distinguished two South Daytona public safety employees who were recently honored by the Port Orange-South Daytona Chamber of Commerce at its Annual City Manager’s Breakfast today.
Officer Joel Workman was named 2011 Chamber Police Officer of the Year and Lt. Ernie Jarvis was honored as the Firefighter of the Year at the Chamber’s annual City Manager’s breakfast. Both men were nominated by their peers.
A former Marine who served in Desert Storm, Officer Workman graduated from Daytona Beach Community College’s Law Enforcement program and followed in his father’s footsteps by becoming a police officer with South Daytona in 2005. He has served as a field training officer, marine patrol officer and traffic homicide investigator.
Police Chief William C. Hall lauded Workman for his dedication and excellent work performance and singled out the officer for his role in capturing a career criminal who was responsible for a rash of burglaries in the City. The resulting investigation resulted in the recovery of several thousand dollars in stolen property being recovered. “He reflects the image of a dedicated police officer,” Chief Hall said.
With six years on the job, Lt. Jarvis began his career as a Firefighter, later became certified as a Paramedic and Driver/Engineer and was promoted to Lieutenant in 2010. He is currently completing his AS degree in fire science at Daytona State College and will take the fire inspector test later this year. Lt. Jarvis also coordinates the department’s CPR program.
Fire Cmdr. Dave Giles spoke of Lt. Jarvis’ commitment to protecting the public on daily basis while responding to hundreds of medical calls and traffic accidents. Jarvis was honored for his exemplary leadership, “can do” attitude and willingness to help train new employees. “He loves his job and believes in our mission,” Giles said.
Both honorees received a self portrait courtesy of Volusia Memorial Funeral Home.

MARIJUANA GROWING OPERATION FOUND IN DEBARY
Volusia County narcotics agents found 44 marijuana plants growing in a DeBary home during a raid Friday and arrested a 21-year-old man who was home at the time. There were a variety of plants ranging from three feet tall to seedlings that all together have an approximate street value $22,000. Also found were 376 grams of processed marijuana and $4,000 in cash.
Narcotics investigators received an anonymous tip about drug activity at 228 Sunrise Blvd. and after conducting an investigation they obtained a search warrant. The West Volusia Narcotics Task Force executed the search warrant mid-morning on Friday. The plants were found in a bedroom and a closet that were rigged with a host of growing equipment, such as special lights, fans, and fertilizer.
Brandon Thornton was home when the search warrant was served. He was charged with cultivation of marijuana, possession of marijuana with intent to sell and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail in Daytona Beach on $5,500 bond.
The West Volusia Narcotics Task Force is a multi-agency force of investigators from the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office and DeLand Police Department that shares resources and crosses jurisdictional boundaries to combat street-level drug and vice crimes.

March 29 to April 1
Spring Fair to bring new look to Port Orange
The sidewalks and park area around Port Orange’s City Center Lake will bloom with arts and crafts and old fashioned fun March 29 to April 1 as the volunteers, who attract more than 100,000 fun-seekers a year with free entertainment and movies and family oriented expos, take on a new theme for their annual Spring event.
“We’ve run Kidz Dayz the last few years in the Spring, and while it has been well-attended, the focus and the appeal has always been for families. Our Board decided this year to recognize that focus and recreate the feel and fun of a fair,” said Debbie Connors, Chair of the event and Executive Director of the Port Orange/South Daytona Chamber of Commerce. “Even those who have never attended a true Spring Fair know from stories and movies the idea was that after the hard winters, community residents got together in the Spring to show off their handiwork and take part in events that let them work off energy stored when winter activities slowed. Our Volusia winters aren’t that bad, but the idea still has a lot of appeal,” she said.
Family Days Spring Fair aims to debut with one of the largest food and craft expositions held in the region. The Craft Fair will be Saturday and Sunday March 31 and April 1 and will replace the business expo feature of Kidz Dayz, although year-round Family Days sponsors will be represented along with food and craft booths. Other activities will include a car show, a pie bake-off and cake walk. Most of the handicrafts and art works will be for sale and many demonstrations are scheduled for those interested in learning new skills. Extensive free entertainment will include excerpts from a well-known musical presented on the amphitheater stage; an old fashioned barn dance, an Amazing Pet Tricks contest and an evening of free movies.
A high point of the Spring Fair will be a large, family friendly carnival with rides and games appealing to all ages. Details of the entertainment and other events will be announced as the dates approach and will be posted on the Family Days web site at www.familydays.com.
Food and craft vendors interested in participating in the Spring Fair are urged to get information from the web site or apply by calling the Family Days office at 386-506-5935.

Found the following quote from Charles Austin Beard, thought it rather accurate. -- Larry in Florida"There is but one way to know the truth, and that is not a golden one.It is fraught with toil and sacrifice and perhaps ridicule. The seeker of the truth must be fearless,he must not be afraid to enter the innermost holies of holies and to tear down the veils of superstition that hang about any human or so-called divine institution,it is truth that makes men free.If the truth tears down every church and government under the sun,let the truth be known and the truth will only be known when men cease to swallow the capsules of ancient doctors of divinities and politics;and when men begin to seek the truth in the records of history, politics, religion, and science.

In Fight Over Piracy Bills, New Economy Rises Against Old
excerpts follow:
WASHINGTON — When the powerful world of old media mobilized to win passage of an online antipiracy bill, it marshaled the reliable giants of K Street — the United States Chamber of Commerce, the Recording Industry Association of America and, of course, the motion picture lobby, with its new chairman, former SenatorChristopher J. Dodd, the Connecticut Democrat and an insider’s insider
Yet on Wednesday this formidable old guard was forced to make way for the new as Web powerhouses backed by Internet activists rallied opposition to the legislation through Internet blackouts and cascading criticism, sending an unmistakable message to lawmakers grappling with new media issues: Don’t mess with the Internet. . . . .
. . . .It appeared by Wednesday evening that Congress would follow Bank of America, Netflix and Verizon as the latest institution to change course in the face of a netizen revolt.. . .
Phone calls and e-mail messages poured in to Congressional offices against the Stop Online Piracy Act in the House and the Protect I.P. Act in the Senate. One by one, prominent backers of the bills dropped off. . . .
. . . . “It’s a new day,” he added. “Brace yourselves.” . . . .
. . . .Then the Web rose up. Activists said the legislation would censor the Web, force search engines to play policemen for a law they hate and cripple innovation in one of the most vibrant sectors of the American economy. . . . .
. . . . And for all the campaign contributions, Washington parties and high-priced lobbyists the old economy could muster, nothing could compare to the tentacles the new economy can reach into Americans’ everyday lives through sites like Wikipedia. . . . .

A Political Coming of Age for the Tech
Industry
By THE NEW YORK TIMES
The battle over two Congressional bills intended to prevent
copyright violations on the Internet marks a political
coming of age for the tech industry, reports Jenna Wortham
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/18/technology/web-wide-protest-over-two-antipiracy-bills.html?ref=technology&nl=technology&emc=techupdateema2
in Wednesday's New York Times. The relatively young and
politically disorganized tech industry has found its voice
in opposing the bills, which it says would go too far -
potentially violating free speech and stifling innovation
- by allowing media companies to shut down Web sites they
say are abusing copyrights. It's an issue that has led to
a rare show of unity for the industry's players - from
venture capitalists to the smallest Web sites. The bills
have been shelved
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/15/us/white-house-says-it-opposes-parts-of-2-antipiracy-bills.html?ref=technology&nl=technology&emc=techupdateema2
for the time being, but the industry is not letting up in
trying to sway public opinion. On Wednesday, a Web-wide
protest includes a 24-hour shutdown of the English-language
Wikipedia site. The main pages of several other sites,
including Google https://www.google.com/, Craigslist
http://newyork.craigslist.org/ and Wired
http://www.wired.com/, also reflect their opposition to the
bills. Rallies are planned Wednesday in New York, San
Francisco and Seattle. And in Washington the lobbying
remains fierce from both supporters and opponents of the
legislation. Around the Web, the controversy over the bills
and the protests also received wide attention. At The
Atlantic Megan Garber wrote about
http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2012/01/the-discussion-that-led-to-the-wikipedia-blackout-is-pretty-amazing/251491/
the discussion within Wikipedia that led to the discussion
to shut down. On Mashable, Chris Heald analyzed the
legislation
http://mashable.com/2012/01/17/sopa-dangerous-opinion/ in
detail to explain the arguments against it. Meanwhile, The
New Yorker directed readers

to the poet John Milton's defense of free speech before
