LAKESIDE JAZZ
SAVE THE DATE!
APRIL 20-21, 2012
IN BEAUTIFUL PORT ORANGE, FLORIDA
8 MINUTES FROM THE BEACH!

March 29 to April 1
Spring Fair to bring new look to Port Orange

The sidewalks and park area around Port Orange’s City Center Lake will bloom with arts and crafts and old fashioned fun March 29 to April 1 as the volunteers, who attract more than 100,000 fun-seekers a year with free entertainment and movies and family oriented expos, take on a new theme for their annual Spring event.

“We’ve run Kidz Dayz the last few years in the Spring, and while it has been well-attended, the focus and the appeal has always been for families.  Our Board decided this year to recognize that focus and recreate the feel and fun of a fair,” said Debbie Connors, Chair of the event and Executive Director of the Port Orange/South Daytona Chamber of Commerce.  “Even those who have never attended a true Spring Fair know from stories and movies the idea was that after the hard winters, community residents got together in the Spring to show off their handiwork and take part in events that let them work off energy stored when winter activities slowed.  Our Volusia winters aren’t that bad, but the idea still has a lot of appeal,” she said.

Family Days Spring Fair aims to debut with one of the largest food and craft expositions held in the region.  The Craft Fair will be Saturday and Sunday March 31 and April 1 and will replace the business expo feature of Kidz Dayz, although year-round Family Days sponsors will be represented along with food and craft booths. Other activities will include a car show, a pie bake-off and cake walk. Most of the handicrafts and art works will be for sale and many demonstrations are scheduled for those interested in learning new skills.  Extensive free entertainment will include excerpts from a well-known musical presented on the amphitheater stage; an old fashioned barn dance, an Amazing Pet Tricks contest and an evening of free movies.

A high point of the Spring Fair will be a large, family friendly carnival with rides and games appealing to all ages.  Details of the entertainment and other events will be announced as the dates approach and will be posted on the Family Days web site at www.familydays.com.

Food and craft vendors interested in participating in the Spring Fair are urged to get information from the web site or apply by calling the Family Days office at 386-506-5935.

The City of South Daytona

FPL Supported Petition Deemed Not In Compliance With Laws

SOUTH DAYTONA –   A petition circulated by the FPL-backed political committee “Take Back Our Power” (TBOP) is not substantially in compliance with the Division of Elections standard petition form, and the City has been advised by legal counsel to return the signed, unapproved forms to the Political Action Committee. (See attached.)

In an effort to conduct its city elections in accordance with state law, the City retained legal counsel which determined that the format “departs from the state-adopted form in a material way” by not including statements informing voters that all information on the form, including signatures, becomes public record, that it is a crime to knowingly sign more than one petition and that the form will not be valid if all requested information is not completed. In addition, counsel contacted the Division of Elections, who advised that the Division would not approve any petition form that did not include this information. City Attorney Scott Simpson concurred with the opinion and recommendation.

The FPL-funded petition drive effort follows a protracted legal battle between the City and the utility over the City’s right to exercise the purchase option contained in its franchise agreement to buy the electrical distribution system, despite the fact that the City already voted to purchase the utility in July. Following the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s ruling that FPL was not entitled to stranded cost, the City received a letter from FPL stating that it was forming a PAC to amend the City Charter in an attempt to stop the City from buying the system. Financial documents filed by the PAC show that FPL has contributed $20,000, while residents have contributed less than $300 to date.

TBOP was previously given notice regarding the petition format.  On Dec. 9, TBOP submitted the charter amendment petition to the City. The City Clerk denied TBOP’s petition format, directing TBOP to resubmit the petition in accordance with the State’s pre-approved petition form. TBOP responded that it believed that it was in compliance and proceeded to collect signatures on the unapproved petition form. Those signed petitions were submitted to the City in January.

LEAVING KEYS IN CAR IS OPEN INVITATION TO THIEVES

Don’t make life easy for car thieves by leaving your car keys in the ignition. It might seem harmless to leave a car running in a store’s parking lot while you dash inside “just for a minute.” But that minute is all opportunistic thieves need to take off with your vehicle. Making the scenario potentially worse is when children are left unattended in a vehicle. Not only is this dangerous, it’s also a crime.

A 60-year-old man suffered the consequences of leaving his keys in his car when he went into a convenience store near Daytona Beach Jan. 15. He watched as a man jumped into the unlocked vehicle, used the keys left in the ignition to start it up, and then speed away. His car was later recovered, but the theft could have been easily prevented by simply taking his keys with him. There are other similar incidents where vehicles were stolen because spare keys left inside were easily found or the owner was distracted and forgot to take the keys with him or her.

Deputies want to prevent crime, not write a bunch of tickets. However, leaving keys in the ignition of an unattended vehicle is a nonmoving traffic violation subject to a $116 fine. Even more significantly, it’s a crime to leave a child younger than six years old unattended in a vehicle. The person responsible for doing so could face a second-degree misdemeanor if the child is left for more than 15 minutes. If the vehicle is running or the child is in danger, the responsible person could also face a noncriminal traffic fine of up to $500. Deputies will be vigilant for all of these infractions, especially in convenience store and grocery store parking lots where motorists most often leave keys in their cars or leave the engine running.

Misleading Claims in Obama’s First 2012 Spot

Dissembling on ethics, jobs and oil imports

January 20, 2012

Summary

President Obama’s first 2012 campaign ad misleads on ethics, “clean-energy” jobs and U.S. dependence on oil imports.

  • The spot uses outdated quotes from groups that said his record on ethics is “unprecedented” and that he “kept a promise to toughen ethics rules.” Those same groups said later that he “has let down millions of Americans who accepted his word” and rated his promise as “broken.”
  • The 30-second TV spot also trumpets a claim of “2.7 million jobs” in “America’s clean-energy industry.” That mostly counts jobs put in place long before Obama took office.
  • Finally, it boasts that U.S. dependence on foreign oil has declined to below 50 percent, as a net share of total demand, for the first time in more than a decade. That’s true, and increasing U.S. oil production is a factor (despite Republican criticisms that Obama is anti-drilling). But economists say the chief factor is reduced oil consumption, brought on by the recent economic recession.

"To Be or Not to Be? ---

That 'IS' the question"

It depends on your definition of 'is'.

Father and Son discuss
Clinton/Monica debacle.

Yes indeed, the most insulting destruction to humanity's intellect in the past century.  And worse than a President  whining away his lack of discretion in a room adjoining our sacred oval office, his loyalists not only defended that kind of rhetoric and idiotic logic, right through impeachment, thereafter, and today blame others like Ken Starr for the imbecile's problem with his unsatisfied wants and desires.  The hell with Bill Clinton and Hillary during that episode, what about Democratic party loyalists who put this nation into such a linguistic turmoil that adolescents trying to find themselves in a world of inconsistent rules, really discovered that lying was not only proper, but can be rewarding?  It all comes down to this.  Truth is not real and objective.  Faith in anything, a person, religion, or political party, trumps logic and truth.  As a black leader once said, "If you believe something is true, then it is true".  As representative Conyers cunningly observed, on meet the press, in front of Bill Bennet, about that national problem, "We are not God!" and cannot judge.  Bill Bennet replied, "Well put!".  lol

And Lanny Davis.  He still turns my stomach sour when I see him on TV.  Boy,  Robert, you sure know how to push my button!
That whole episode was one of the most spectacular, amazing controversy I ever witnessed in my lifetime, and I am sure it has inflicted serious damage upon our social fabric and rational discourse.  I was at a seminar when a logic professor from Albany NY told me that irrational logic in a court of law was not an outrage, (and we were not talking about Clinton/Lewinsky, but the kidnapping of Cathy Bears on I.I.) since a lawyer in his attempt to defend his client can try anything to get his defendant off or a better deal.  "We should be thankful that the defendant did not kill the 14 yr. old girl, but decided to release the kidnapped girl from her down stairs basement confinement in his home, behind a fire place that hid secret stairs to his home made dungeon."  And thus -  we should be thankful, that Bill Clinton did not have sex with Monica, and father an illigitimate child.  Or worse, what a great man Bill was and is, because he did not force himself upon Monica, and it was a consexual, non sexual encounter.

I was still arguing with democratic loyalists in the year 2000 about the awful thing the republican agenda and Mr.Ken Starr put poor pure Bill through.  I am sorry you brought this episode up.  It upsets me still, and will for the rest of today.  But thanks for reminding us what blind faith and prejudice in one's party, or one person can do to society.  No wonder there are Hitler's waiting out there for such an opportunity to be swept into power.  Who is at fault?  The  stupid people of this nation, and no,  I do not include my self. I am a NPA.
Thanks for the opinion Rob, write again, and let's talk about our present elected leaders and their followers.  Geez -  what is worse, faith in one's religion or faith in one's political party.  Bunch of idiots out there in the voting republic I think.

"If the--if he--if 'is' means is and never has been, that is not--that is one thing. If it means there is none, that was a completely true statement....Now, if someone had asked me on that day, are you having any kind of sexual relations with Ms. Lewinsky, that is, asked me a question in the present tense, I would have said no. And it would have been completely true."

This is the norm for our politicians! This is the culture our country has become!  In great part thanks to our "leaders".   If an employee gave me an answer like this, he would be out on his ass!

10:00 PM-12:00 AM -- The Universe - Nemesis: The Sun's Evil Twin
Could there be a monstrous, undiscovered star orbiting our own Sun? Could it be scattering killer comets throughout our Solar System like clockwork every 26 million years? New scientific surveys are probing the edges of our Solar System--a realm populated by giant worlds and mysterious planetoid--hunting for Nemesis, the Sun's purported evil twin. We may be on the verge of discovering this ultimate death star, suspected of causing every mass extinction in Earth's history. We employ everyday experiences to explain what Nemesis is and why it's been so hard to find. Experts start a wildfire on a dry California hillside, race a NASCAR around an oval track, and juggle fire, all in the effort to present how Nemesis works, and why life on Earth may depend on its discovery.
