LAKESIDE JAZZ
SAVE THE DATE!
APRIL 20-21, 2012
IN BEAUTIFUL PORT ORANGE, FLORIDA
8 MINUTES FROM THE BEACH!

March 29 to April 1
Spring Fair to bring new look to Port Orange

The sidewalks and park area around Port Orange’s City Center Lake will bloom with arts and crafts and old fashioned fun March 29 to April 1 as the volunteers, who attract more than 100,000 fun-seekers a year with free entertainment and movies and family oriented expos, take on a new theme for their annual Spring event.

“We’ve run Kidz Dayz the last few years in the Spring, and while it has been well-attended, the focus and the appeal has always been for families.  Our Board decided this year to recognize that focus and recreate the feel and fun of a fair,” said Debbie Connors, Chair of the event and Executive Director of the Port Orange/South Daytona Chamber of Commerce.  “Even those who have never attended a true Spring Fair know from stories and movies the idea was that after the hard winters, community residents got together in the Spring to show off their handiwork and take part in events that let them work off energy stored when winter activities slowed.  Our Volusia winters aren’t that bad, but the idea still has a lot of appeal,” she said.

Family Days Spring Fair aims to debut with one of the largest food and craft expositions held in the region.  The Craft Fair will be Saturday and Sunday March 31 and April 1 and will replace the business expo feature of Kidz Dayz, although year-round Family Days sponsors will be represented along with food and craft booths. Other activities will include a car show, a pie bake-off and cake walk. Most of the handicrafts and art works will be for sale and many demonstrations are scheduled for those interested in learning new skills.  Extensive free entertainment will include excerpts from a well-known musical presented on the amphitheater stage; an old fashioned barn dance, an Amazing Pet Tricks contest and an evening of free movies.

A high point of the Spring Fair will be a large, family friendly carnival with rides and games appealing to all ages.  Details of the entertainment and other events will be announced as the dates approach and will be posted on the Family Days web site at www.familydays.com.

Food and craft vendors interested in participating in the Spring Fair are urged to get information from the web site or apply by calling the Family Days office at 386-506-5935.

February 6, 2012
For More Information Contact Liz Yancey at 386-424-2175 or lyancey@cityofnsb.com

The Mayors’ Fitness Challenge is back for another round! Mayor Adam Barringer of New Smyrna Beach and Mayor Michael Thomas of Edgewater have teamed up again to challenge their communities to get fit, and stay fit. To help support the community in this challenge, they have created the Mayors’ Healthy Lifestyle Contest, a ten-week competition to improve your health and lose unwanted body fat.  The individual who improves their health and fitness the most will win a $1000! But in the end everyone wins with a healthier lifestyle.

The program kicks-off on Monday, February 6th – but community members can join the competition at any time.  Register at the New Smyrna Beach Parks and Recreation Office, 1000 Live Oak Street, New Smyrna Beach or call 386-424-2175. The registration fee is $75, which covers the cost of the before and after fitness assessments (includes body fat analysis, measurements, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels) boot camp classes, cardio sessions, and a t-shirt – a value of over $500!  The boot camp classes will be on Mondays at 5:30 pm and the cardio sessions will be on Thursdays at 5:30 pm - both programs will be held at the NSB Sports Complex.

All of the contestants last year agree that it was a great experience and worth more than the $75 registration fee. In addition to this being a great event, proceeds will benefit New Smyrna Beach High School and community children’s programs.

9th Annual Freemanville Day Ceremony
Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, 941 N. Orange Avenue, Port Orange
February 14, 2012 at 4:00 p.m.

Port Orange, FL - In honor of our community’s African-American heritage, the City of Port Orange will host the 9th Annual Freemanville Day Ceremony on February 14, 2012, at 4:00 p.m.  Hosted in partnership with the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church and the Port Orange Historical Trust, the ceremony will be held at the church, 941 N. Orange Avenue.  The public is welcome to attend.

This year’s featured speaker is Dr. Leonard Lempel of Daytona State College.  Dr. Lempel conducted research on the beginnings of Port Orange and Freemanville.  His presentation will focus on Ms. Esther Hill Hawks, the wife of Port Orange’s founder Dr. John Milton Hawks.  A medical doctor herself, Ms. Hawks run the integrated school.  Also on the program are Harold Cardwell from the Port Orange Historical Trust and Alberta McLeod who will share stories of living and raising children in Freemanville.

At 12 Noon on April 26, 1867, the U.S. Postal Service officially recognized Port Orange as a community.  Dr. John Milton Hawks, a Union Army surgeon, and his fellow Union Army officers established Port Orange after the U.S. Civil War.   Initially, 500 former slaves settled near the shores of the Halifax River on public lands secured with the help of the US Freedman Bureau in 1866.  They came to Port Orange to work for the Florida Land & Lumber Company, which Dr. Hawks and his partners formed.  An additional 1,000 freed slaves made Port Orange their home six months later.

Falling on hard times, the settlement, the company, and the integrated school disbanded in 1869.  A majority of the settlers returned to their home states or headed for area citrus groves looking for work.  Over time, the few families and individuals who stayed made up the pioneering African-American neighborhood of Port Orange known as Freemanville.

For information on the ceremony, contact Kent E. Donahue, Special Assistant to the City Manager, at 386-506-5501 or kdonahue@port-orange.org.

The Port Orange City Council finished tonight's council meeting some 15 minutes ago.

hopefully my dvr recorded the session and hopefully I can find some time tomorrow to show you some video segments of the council meeting.

It was interesting to hear Don Burnette's evaluation of the city manager, done by reviewing the 9 pages of last year's goals offered by the city manager, and Don scored the CM a mark of 86.9 percent. Bob Ford followed with a comment that the city council should give the city manager goals for the year, and then grade him on his work performance.

Bob Pohlman had a lot of praise for Ken Parker, and I guess Bob is suffering with a bad cold which was evident. Hope he takes lots of fluid and has medication at home, because in Port Orange a doctor can not dispense or prescribe medication after 9 pm. Even good, retubable doctors are forbidden by the ordinance. The city council had thought such an ordinance was necessary. Reminds me of the blue laws in New York State in the 60's when it was illegal to sell aspirins on Sunday to parents who wanted to take care of a sick child. -- hank poanposted 9 31 pm. 2 7 12

Item 25 -        Authorization for Wayne L. Helsby, Esquire to Initiate Litigation Proceedings for Enforcement of the Public Employee’s Relations Commission Decision

PERC’s Order finding that the International Association of Fire Fighters, Local 3118 (“IAFF”) committed an unfair labor practice by not conducting a ratification vote has not been appealed.  Staff recommends initiating litigation to require the IAFF to conduct the ratification vote.

Staff recommends authorization for Wayne L. Helsby, Esquire to file a lawsuit in the Seventh Judicial Circuit, Volusia County, Florida, for enforcement of the Public Employees Relations Commission (“PERC”) decision rendered on December 22, 2011, in ULP Case No. CB-2011-061, and authorize its continued prosecution on behalf of the City.

City Manager Comment: The City continues to work with the IAFF on contract negotiations.  We will be conducting another workshop with the Union and the Actuary attempting to reach an agreement with the Union on contract issues.  However, PERC has ordered the Union to conduct an election on the Impasse contract.  More than 30 days has lapsed since the PERC order.  In the statute, Circuit Court is the venue for enforcement of the PERC order.  Although we will continue to meet with the Union on attempting to reach agreement, we are requesting permission to go into Circuit Court to seek a court order if necessary to compel the Union to conduct a ratification vote.  They have raised two issues.  Our labor counsel has addressed those issues with their attorney.  Both of the issues should not be addressed pre-vote since those questions would have to be addressed in a post vote discussion.

Employers must have health insurance for workers covering contraceptives and abortion.

Last night on internet am radio, I was listening to a talk show from Philadelphia, WPHT. There were a series of interesting opinions on the Obama Health Insurance issue. Besides the issue of Catholic social organizations being forced to carry health insurance for their employees which cover contraceptives and birth control, the larger issue is that the insurance companies are drinking champagne, toasting the millions of increased dollars that will come to them, by Obama mandating the additional health coverage. It is speculated that more employers will simply drop health insurance benefits for their employees, tending to bring the nation to a one payer, federal health insurance, something that Obama has been striving for.

The speculation seems to be reasonable to me.

For the record, because of the expensive manipulation of the health care system by the insurance companies, I would like to see the commercial insurance companies corporate greed, eliminated from the equation.

And, I send this section to my brother, a cardiologist, reminding him of our conversation over 25 years ago, in our parents' home in Little Neck, NY, where I predicted to him that this nation was headed towards socialistic type of health system because of the yearly increases in health costs. Let it be noted, that at the time, and as it is now for me and my wife, we have excellent NY State health insurance coverage.

Vt diocese responds to priest-abuse suit
San Antonio Express
BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — The Roman Catholic diocese of Vermont says it could be put out of business, and constitutional protections of religious freedom could be violated by a priest-abuse lawsuit. The Burlington Free Press (http://bfpne.ws/yZACU1 ) ...

-- I am almost speechless, except that if it were any other corporate business as is the Catholic Church, it would have already been put out of business. Don't private schools like day care centers have to be licensed and after a pattern of wide spread abuse and criminal activities, aren't the license taken away and the schools put out of business? Should be, I think. The defenses of the Catholic Church in these matters are trumping the idiotic loyal defense of Bill Clinton in the Monica Case. Indeed, I bring up a poor comparison since the sins of the Church are so much more enormous than what Bill and Monica enjoyed. --- hank

Is Thumper the better example?
Daytona Beach News-Journal
By LARRY MILLER, Port Orange Too bad our political candidates haven't seen the movie "Bambi," because I am sure they would remember the wisdom of Thumper the Rabbit quoting his father: "If you can't say something nice, don't say nothing at all.

-- Mr. Miller, you are such a nice person, so please find a way to make a fairy tale come true in the real world. I am sorry but life is just a box of Chocolates, and Bambi and Santa Clause are meant for children who are not mature enough to follow politics which is a competitive game, and in case you have not noticed lately, there is nothing nice about it at all. I myself enjoyed Bambi and Santa Clause when I was a child. Do you remember Dumbo? I cried for Dumbo when he was separated from his mother. Do you remember that part? - do you remember that - that was cool! --

I suggest teaching your children that the real world is not like the fairy tales, and that there are a lot of dumb people out there who hate the other political party, not seeing that their own political party is demonic too. There also are a lot of dumb people out there who think the wisdom of a fairy tale will solve real world problems. But I am so glad you care. You care about the things that I care about, but alas, that alone gets us no where.

Obama breaks faith on contraception

By E.J. DIONNE, Washington Post
One of Barack Obama's great attractions as a presidential candidate was his sensitivity to the feelings and intellectual concerns of religious believers. That is why it is so remarkable that he utterly botched the admittedly difficult question of how contraceptive services should be treated under the new health care law.

THE WISE CHINESE DOCTOR

Q: Doctor, I've heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life. Is this true?

A: Heart only good for so many beats, and that it... Don't waste on exercise. Everything wear out eventually. Speeding up heart not make you live longer; it like saying you extend life of car by driving faster. Want to live longer? Take nap.

Q: Should I reduce my alcohol intake?

A: Oh no. Wine made from fruit. Brandy distilled wine, that mean they take water out of fruity bit so you get even more of goodness that way. Beer also made of grain. Bottom up!

Q: How can I calculate my body/fat ratio?

A: Well, if you have body and you have fat, your ratio one to one.. If you have two body, your ratio two to one.

Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular exercise program?

A: Can't think of single one, sorry. My philosophy: No pain...good!

Q: Aren't fried foods bad for you?

A: YOU NOT LISTENING! Food fried in vegetable oil. How getting more vegetable be bad?

Q
: Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the middle?
A: Oh no! When you exercise muscle, it get bigger. You should only be doing sit-up if you want bigger stomach.

Q: Is chocolate bad for me?

A: You crazy?!? HEL-LO-O!! Cocoa bean! Another vegetable! It best feel-good food around!

Q: Is swimming good for your figure?

A: If swimming good for figure, explain whale to me.

Q: Is getting in shape important for my lifestyle?

A: Hey! 'Round' is shape!

Well... I hope this has cleared up any misconceptions you may have had about food and diets.

And remember:
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Chardonnay in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO-HOO, what a ride!!"

During the second world war, my dad worked long hours at the sperry's defense plant. 7 days a week. I remember him always trying to stay awake when he was home, but snoringly falling asleep in his chair.

After the war was over, he returned to normal working hours, and enjoying fishing, he often took me on a charter boat going out of Sheephead's bay on weekends. We went on Capt. Izzy's boat.

During the week, he kept up with fishing reports in a 7 am news radio fishing report. The introduction to the fishing report section played the song, Sailor's Hornpipe. Whenever I hear the song, I have happy memories of fishing with dad on weekends. -- hank
